A trade deficit is produced when the total amount of goods and services imported by a certain country exceeds the total number of goods and services exported by that same country. It also involves an outflow of domestic currency to foreign markets.
These deficits are caused because foreign goods (imports) are relatively cheaper than the ones manufactured by domestic producers, and national consumers prefer to buy from abroad. Foreign prices are more competitive.
