Tom Robinson is the man accused of a crime he didn't commit. Although he isn't guilty, the entire town automatically sees him as guilty. Since Atticus is the only lawyer who will defend him, Atticus is also seen as a reject in society. This is an example of the segregation that took place in this time period.
