Acids are the general name of an aqueous compounds where hydrogen is a cation.

An acid is a compound or ion which has ability to donate [tex] H^{+} [/tex] ion or proton. When acid is dissolved in aqueous solution, then it is capable for donating proton or [tex] H^{+} [/tex] ion.

General equation in aqueous solution:

[tex] HA\rightarrow H^{+}+A^{-} [/tex]

HA is an acid which dissociates into [tex] H^{+} (cation) and A^{-} (anion) [/tex].

Thus, general name is acid.
