X represents an "unknown" value.

If you are asking for this question to be solved, please see below:

[tex]x^2+x^2+9=41\\2x^2+9=41\\2x^2=32\\x^2=16\\x=\pm4[/tex]

X can equal either positive or negative 4.  This is because when you square a negative, the answer will be positive.
