a + 3b = (–4, 11)

Solution:

Given vectors are a = (–1, 2) and b = (–1, 3).

Adding two vectors:

Add first component of one with first component of other and

add second component of one with second component of other

To find a + 3b:

a + 3b = (–1, 2) + 3(–1, 3)

          = (–1, 2) + (–3, 9)

          = (–1 +(–3), 2 + 9)

          = (–1 –3, 2 + 9)

          = (–4, 11)

Hence a + 3b = (–4, 11).
