Why is the exposed rock surface more weathered than the interior of a rock?

The outside of the rock is exposed to water, wind, or dust that over time breaks down the outside of the rock.

Weathering wears away exposed surfaces over time. Clay, more porous than rock, can swell with water, weathering the surrounding, harder rock. As rust expands, it weakens rock and helps break it apart
