Slaves were subjected to work for free. They were tortured and sold like livestock and not humans. in fact, nearly every right they had was stricken away from them in America. they mainly worked on plantations because their "owners" could collect tax on them and use them as collateral. Slaves before the civil war were nothing more than an object to slave owners.
