Jack travelled 5 miles plus 3 times as many miles as Janice. He travelled 23 miles in all. How far did he travel?

Answer: Jack travels 5 miles + 3*(janice's miles)  

 

If Jack travels 30 miles, then

 

30 = 5 + 3*Janice

 

subtract 5 from both sides

 

25=3*Janice

 

divide both sides by 3

 

Janice travelled 25/3 miles, or 8.33333 miles
