From the original 13 colonies, the U.S government gradually began purchasing land acquired by foreign nations, took active participation in expanding west into Native Indian territory, and established a firm grasp of land all the way to california. States such as Texas gained independence from foreign controllers, and many lose bits of land was gathered.
