The answer would be 14. Using the order of operations, I can solve this problem by multiplying 5*2 and then adding 4 which would equal 14. The reason you multiply first is because my teacher taught me the acronym; PEMDAS which stands for

Parenthesis
Exposits
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction

So for any equation, you're supposed to do the parenthesis first, then the exponents, Multiplication, Etc.
