Baghdad had been for centuries the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate and one of the most important centers of knowledge in the world. In 1258 the Mongol army destroyed the city and murdered over 200,000 people. Mongols destroyed the Grand Library of Baghdad, and also all mosques, palaces and hospitals.
