A farmer has seventeen cows; all but eight die. how many cows does the farmer have left?

he has 8 cows left since it says ALL BUT 8 die.

Total number of cows = 17

Number of cows that die = 17 - 8 = 9 

Number of cows alive = 8.

The answer is 8. It was already in the question. You don't actually need to do any calculation for that. Though you would have to do calculations for finding the number of cows that did die.
