The square root is when a number is multiplied by itself.

The square root of a number, n, written as [tex] \sqrt{n} [/tex], is the number that gives n when multiplied by itself. 

For example,

[tex] \sqrt{100} = \sqrt{10 *10} = 10[/tex]
