Maintenance rehearsal is considered shallow processing, while elaborative rehearsal is a form of deep processing. Under maintenance rehearsal, the person is simply trying to state something from rote memory: they are not really expounding upon the subject. Elaborative rehearsal is the type that requires more synthesis and a greater overall understanding of the subject matter.
