By British Law the American Colonies could trade with nobody else than Great Britain. Also it restricted the colonies as to what they could get from themselves. This meant that the colonies could not develop allot of heavy industry like Iron mongering and ship building. This gave Britain a captive place for it's goods and controlled the goods coming from the new world and the development of industry in her North American Colonies.
i hope that helps
