I believe you line the decimals up, the biggest number goes on top and the smallest on bottom .

My suggestion:Put the two numbers on top of each other 49.005                                                   and use the regrouping method                 7.157
48.99  15  subtract 7.157 that way to make the form 40-0 8-7 0.9-0.1 0.09-0.05 and 0.015-0.007 for the answer 41.848
